Abstract

The growing attention to the development of socioemotional skills since the beginning of the century has led to the development of different frameworks that drive, in turn, the assessment of socio-emotional development in education. One of the challenges is related to the use of frameworks from a specific context -usually the Western one- as universal proposals for all cultural contexts. This article aims to provide an empirical contribution to the discussion on the use and combination of emic and etic approaches in the assessment and research on socio-emotional skills, based on the analysis of two studies carried out with students from rural schools who participated in an educational program. In the first study, under an etic approach, 2485 students from public secondary schools located in rural areas in Piura and Ayacucho filled a set of Likert-type scales to assess a theoretical proposal of ten socio-emotional skills. In the second study, following an emic approach, 65 students from public secondary schools placed in rural areas in Piura and Cusco were interviewed about their perceptions of socio-emotional skills valued as important for study and work. The results show the existence of common socio-emotional skills between the emic and etic approaches, as well as some skills that are important for the communities and are not considered in the conceptual framework that guided the etic approach in research.
