Abstract

This article is based on an ethnographic study of six localities in the high Andes of Yauyos province, Lima region. A wide variety of evidence reveals how the functioning of educational institutions is affected by economic, sociopolitical and cultural processes in the micro contexts where they are located. The many connections with local institutions, actors, and practices condition the possibility of introducing reforms. The low prestige attributed to rural lifeways appears as a learned phenomenon which enters into conflict with the desire of many children and adolescents to continue running farming enterprises, given improvements in technologies. The study highlights the importance of knowledge and capabilities acquired outside of school.
