Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of specific phonological awareness instruction on the progress of particular literacy skills (phonological encoding, print awareness and vocabulary acquisition) of first year primary school pupils. The research employed a mixed-explanatory sequential design carried out with 43 pupils divided into an experimental group (22) and a control group (21) who were administered a Phonological Awareness Screening Test, a Pseudoword Retention Test, a Phonological and Print Processing Test and a Peabody Vocabulary Test before and after the experimental procedure. The implementation of a targeted phonological awareness program for seven weeks to the experimental group of students during the experimental procedure resulted in a significant high-level impact on the development of previously measured early literacy skills.
